I don't usually like westerns and usually don't read them. But this was enthusiastically recommended by more than one friend. So I dived in. At first, it was a typical western. Don't like deserts, don't much care for prairies, I really like trees and woods. But after a couple of chapters, the characters started drawing me in. Further and further, until I couldn't put the book down. The setting became secondary to me and I kept reading to find out what happened to all these people. And the twist at the end, and the motivation for the change, it was great and plausible and so good. It was worth my time.Product details

Whippoorwill The Whippoorwill Trilogy Book 1 edition by Sharon Sala Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Again, I will not give a synoposis of the story as it has previously done by
more literate than I. This is a delightful story, life of a girl-woman
alone since the age of 12 or so. She makes her way the only way she can and
she is still independent. She always has a bath at night, every night, and has
an eye out to better herself. What she does and how she does it is a story
worth reading and better than that-a story filled with laughter and giggles
and snorts of just plain hilarity. Give this book a try and I am sure
you will be reading the other two.
I thoroughly enjoyed book 1 of this series. Anything Sharon Sala is great. One forgets what it was like in the 1800s and how people had to reinvent themselves to survive.
I read this book in about three hours - and laughed so hard at one point, I choked. The humor creeps up on you, and the absurdity of some of the situations had me laughing out loud...at work. Oops. I'm ready to start the second one!!
Don't expect the usual mystery/drama. There's a little of both, but not what you're used to from Sala. There's a lot of characters thrown in. Lots of different situations. Lots of craziness. This is the best book I've read in a while...and I've already bought the second and third at full price, which is something I never do.
This book offered more than I expected since I have not read author before. All three in the Whippoorwill Trilogy were great reads. I look forward to reading other books from Sala since I hear these three were a departure from her normal writings. That being said, I don't think you'll be disappointed at all. It was set in the west and author captured the feel of how it truly must have been in those days. She offered unique representations of that era while developing the ever-changing personalities and life circumstances of the characters. You grew to love, support, and encourage the characters to keep going...in a place where that was hard to do - back then, back there.
This was a very entertaining and good reading. It was my first book by Ms. Sala, it will not be. my last. I am already lining up more of her books on "My Wish List". It was a depiction of the hard life in the early settlers lives; but, it was a good rendering of the hilarity of things that happen even in the worst settings. Also it encourages people to not think less of people who they believe are beneath them as those same people will be the ones to support you when your so called "friends" disappear!
I an not a fan of short stories but this author took many different characters, dove right into their situations, tied them to the plot and wove it all together. The character descriptions and immediate actions took me right to the core of their personalities and a long back story was unnecessary to see how it all fit together. I would have preferred a happier ending, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the descriptive language the author used and the characters. I will look for more by this author.
"A departure from the "norm" for Sharon Sala, as with Field of Poppies, and I love it. It is a VERY RARE thing for me to pay full price for a book but I won't hesitate when buying any of Sharon Sala's books because she NEVER leaves me disappointed. Fear that Sharon's fans wouldn't "follow" her into an another genre." well that is just a crazy thought because Sharon's Sala's style always feels like home. There is such a genuine honesty to her storytelling that you literally feel the breath of her characters. This book may be outside the "norm" but true Sharon Sala fans will follow her down whatever journey her brilliant imagination wants to take them on and Whipporwill was one heck of a ride. The many colorful characters, the town whore Letty, the town drunk Eulis, the not so holier than thou Reverand Howe . . .and all the others had me flipping pages all night long and buying at full kindle price the next two books in the series. Starting The Amen Trail right now!
